Our Mission and Focus
The Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation is excited to work with its Heart and Soles Run’s benefiting organizations from 2017 through 2019 to fund projects relevant to the “Healthy Students” in the community. Funds raised through the run for our beneficiary partners will be used to promote increased physical activity and access to healthy foods among the student populations they serve.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County, Silicon Valley, and North San Mateo County
The Boys and Girls Club is a youth service organization promoting youth guidance through educational, vocational, recreational, social, and character development. These initiatives develop young people’s capacities to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.
Heart & Soles funding will help to support exercise programs, equipment acquisition, and facility improvements.
San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund, Get Earthquakes Fit
The San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund facilitates and supports programs that produce positive change for children and families in our community with an emphasis on health and fitness. The Get Earthquakes Fit program invites students to step up their physical activity in the classroom and at home through an engaging, five-week course focused on jumpstarting 20 minutes of daily exercise.
Heart & Soles funding will aid in expanding this program from 35 schools to 70.
Santa Clara County Office of Education, JUST RUN
The JUST RUN Program is a web-based program that supports schools and youth organizations with the promotion of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. JUST RUN was developed by Big Sur International Marathon in 2004 with the intention of promoting physical activity and addressing the childhood obesity epidemic. The Santa Clara County Office of Education – Safe & Healthy Schools Department supports the implementation of JUST RUN at schools throughout the county. Students are provided with incentives and rewards for each mile they run or walk. Teachers are also receive training and sports equipment and materials to host a health project on campus. Schools who participate in JUST Run receive an end of the year stipend.
Heart & Soles funding will assist schools with the implementation of physical activities through the program.
Specialized Foundation, Riding for Focus
The mission of the Riding for Focus program is to use cycling as a tool for children to achieve academic, health, and social success. But the program is more than just bikes and gear—Riding for Focus provides a combination of cycling, fitness, and academic performance, all while instilling a lifelong passion for cycling for students who participate in the program.
Heart & Soles funding will assist in awarding the Riding for Focus grant to local Silicon Valley middle schools. The school-based program is designed to provide schools with everything they need to get middle school students riding, including a turnkey physical education curriculum, comprehensive teacher training, and a fleet of bike and safety equipment.
YMCA Silicon Valley, HEPA
The YMCA of Silicon Valley is a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Heart and Soles Run will support the YMCA’s Year-Round Healthy Eating & Physical Activity (HEPA) Standards in 37 Y After School, Summer Learning and Preschool Programs located in underserved communities throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, serving 4,028 Pre-K through 8th grade youth annually.
Heart & Soles funding will assist in the purchase of physical activity equipment to expand the implementation of HEPA.
